She walks once more, and she may yet dance again

Dr. Siddharth Raveendran featured in the news for performing a total hip replacement surgery for only Rs. 30,000 in the taluk government hospital at Kuzhithurai. The patient is a 43 year old woman who is fast recovering. Siddharth belongs to the class of 2004.

The patient had asthma for several months, and after visiting many doctors she started taking steroids. This led to her hip condition. While both hips were affected, the condition of the left hip worsened to grade three, compared to the right where it was grade one.

“She could not attend to herself when she came here six weeks ago”, Dr. Raveendran said.

The hospital does not possess necessary equipment for the surgery. They had to rent it for the operation.

It would cost Rs 12 lakh to buy imported equipment and not less than Rs 5 lakh for an Indian make. So we got permission and hired the equipment for just Rs 500. Implants cost Rs 25,000 and other consumables cost less than Rs 4,000

The woman is fast recovering and will be discharged before Monday. She was on her feet the day after the surgery and started walking the second day.
